Varkala, a magical gem in South India, captivates the hearts of yogis, spiritual travellers and seekers. This breathtaking paradise, boasting an enchanting fusion of long, pristine beaches, tranquil backwaters, shimmering golden sands, and dramatic, towering cliffs. At Lumuma, we found ourselves drawn here by the inherent purity, beauty, unwavering authenticity, and the spirituality that fluctuates in every corner. It's a place where the soul can truly breathe, transform and connect with a higher awareness. We highly recommend a visit to the serene Papanasam Beach. It is said that a dip in its sacred waters can purify and wash away one's sins, offering a sense of renewal and cleansing. You'll often witness local priests performing daily rituals by the water's edge, a testament to the beach's spiritual significance and a beautiful insight into local customs. Equally compelling is a journey to the ancient Janardanaswamy Temple, a magnificent structure with a history spanning 2000 years. This revered temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Lord Vishnu, and its intricate architecture and spiritual ambiance offer a profound glimpse into India's rich religious heritage. Exploring its sacred grounds provides an opportunity for quiet contemplation and appreciation of centuries of devotion. Legends of Varkala One popular legend tells the story of Varkala’s unique name. The story goes that a group of pilgrims, burdened by the weight of their sins, embarked on a journey to seek spiritual solace and absolution. Their path led them to the venerable Sage Narada, renowned for his wisdom and divine insights. Upon meeting with the pilgrims, Narada performed a significant symbolic act. He threw his 'valkalam' – a loincloth meticulously crafted from the fibrous bark of trees – into the air. Miraculously, the valkalam drifted gracefully and landed precisely in this captivating village. This auspicious event is widely believed to be the genesis of the name Varkala, a name that echoes the very act of Narada casting his sacred garment. Following this profound demonstration, Narada, directed the pilgrims to a sacred site within Varkala, known as Papanasam. The name Papanasam itself is deeply significant, directly translating from Sanskrit to "redemption from sins." It was here, at this hallowed location, that Narada instructed the pilgrims to offer their prayers and perform rituals, confident that their devotion would lead to the absolution they so desperately sought. Still to this day, pilgrims from all over India, come to Varkala’s Papanasam Beach to wash away ones sins, by a dip in these sacred waters.
